Rates of attrition

Much criticism and no detectable praise for the Government at the LGA conference yesterday when it comes to business rates and localism.

Most were aggrieved at the extent to which central Government is determined to keep its hands on as much of the cash, and therefore the power, as possible, in complete contrast to earlier ministerial rhetoric on this. Others remain worried at the distributional impacts of the policy, and the potential for it to discriminate against dense residential areas that have less in the way of retail or industry.

It has to be said that most people acknowledged it was an advancement at least – but by promising so much and delivering so little, the Government seems to have ended up in the worst of all worlds.
