Council leader under police investigation quits LGA role

Leicestershire County Council leader David Parsons has stepped down from his LGA role and police have launched an investigation into his travel expenses.

A police spokeswoman told the Leicester Mercury that officers are investigating allegations of financial irregularities relating to Cllr Parsons’Europetrips.

He was censured last week by the council’s standards committee for breaching the councillor code of conduct.

Cllr Parsons said in a statement: “Having been made aware through a press release by Leicestershire County Council that the issue of my expenses has been referred to the police, I remain determined to maintain my good character.

“To that end, I have contacted the chief constable and indicated my willingness to co-operate with the police.

“As these matters are now in the hands of the police, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further.”

On Monday, he stepped down as chairman of the LGA’s Environment & Housing Board, and he is not standing for re-election as chairman of East Midlands Councils.
