WMCA officially launched after delay
The order officially creating the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) came into force today.
The devolved body, which combines Sandwell, Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton councils, was officially approved on 7 June despite criticism from peers, with Lord Kennedy of Southwark calling it “disjointed and confused”.
It was due to come into force a week ago, but was delayed by a last-minute challenge by John Spellar, MP for Warley.
Cllr Bob Sleigh, chair of the Shadow Combined Authority, said: “The WMCA will lead the delivery of the devolution deal and future devolution deals.
“The Combined Authority will be the strong voice for the region; a voice that would be listened to in Whitehall and across the UK. A voice that will ensure this region is also heard on the global stage, attracting inward investment and selling our skills and expertise.”
He paid tribute to the “hard work and negotiation” over the past 18 months that had led to the deal, which he said would attract £8bn of investment over the next 30 years.
