Communities across Wales are set to benefit from more modern, accessible and sustainable transport systems following the announcement of £115.9 million in new funding for 2026–27.
The investment, delivered through the Welsh Government’s Regional Transport Fund, will support local authorities to improve everyday travel, create safer streets and enhance public transport links across the country.
The funding aims to help people walk, wheel, cycle and travel more easily, while supporting climate goals and strengthening local economies.
The £115.9m package is allocated across five key areas:
- £58.5m for walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure
- £24.1m for improving local roads through highway schemes
- £20.9m for better access to public transport
- £7m for road safety improvements
- £3.9m to enhance electric vehicle charging infrastructure
The Welsh Government says the investment will help ensure local transport networks are inclusive, future‑proofed and accessible for people of all ages and mobility levels.
A range of infrastructure schemes will receive funding to improve safety, accessibility and connectivity. These include:
Active Travel Improvements
- £1.1m Penrhyn Bay scheme (Conwy) to upgrade walking, wheeling and cycling routes
- £2.4m to complete the Brecon High Street pedestrianisation project, enhancing safe active travel and placemaking
Public Transport Enhancements
- Opening of the Haverfordwest multi‑modal interchange in southwest Wales, improving links between bus, rail and active travel
- £4m for improvements to the Caerphilly interchange, creating better multimodal connections
Strategic Transport Resilience
- Continued progress on priorities identified by the South East Wales Transport Commission, including measures to create a more sustainable and resilient transport system around the M4 corridor
Ken Skates, Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, said:
“Delivering better transport and connecting communities for all is at the heart of this £115 million investment. We want to make it easier for people to travel to work, school, healthcare and to see friends and family, while also building a more modern, sustainable and integrated transport system across Wales for future generations.
“Our commitment to a one team approach draws on the regional knowledge and trust we have placed in our partners; the CJCs, Local Authorities, Transport for Wales, and wider stakeholders, to ensure this money delivers the greatest benefits.
“These improvements will make real differences to everyday journeys - whether that's safer routes, better paths for walking, wheeling and cycling, or more reliable multimodal connections.”

By investing in active travel routes, better public transport, improved road safety and EV charging infrastructure, the funding aims to support healthier lifestyles, reduce emissions and connect people with jobs, services and opportunities.
The package is part of wider national efforts to reshape Wales’s transport network for the future, ensuring it is modern, inclusive and aligned with Net Zero ambitions.
