Tackling climate change through low carbon virtual events

PSE365 marks Earth Day with low carbon virtual events

With the UK Government setting one of the world’s most ambitious climate change targets to become net zero by 2050, PSE365 held its third Public Sector Decarbonisation Virtual Event in March 2022. We were joined by public sector leaders and innovators to explore how to empower the UK public sector to meet its decarbonisation targets and the opportunities that will create.

In association with Liberty Charge, leaders from across the public sector came together to collaborate and explore the biggest challenges in energy efficiencies in public buildings, power generation, transportation, decarbonising current housing stock, waste strategies and harnessing digital and data.

Following the stark warning in the IPCC’s Climate Report, highlighting the importance of keeping the global temperature below 1.5°C, we can no longer afford to ignore the impact the public sector’s carbon footprint has and the potential for change that could see us reach ever closer to net zero.

At Public Sector Executive we recognise the need to help fight the climate crisis and how we can impact the environment by bringing together leaders, innovators and collaborators from across the public sector virtually to shape the future of the public sector.

Before the global pandemic, the UK held roughly 1.4 million live events in 2019, but what impact did these live events have on our environment? From transport emissions, waste, energy, water and transportation its estimated that the average person attending a conference for a single day in the UK produces as much as 145kg of CO2.

For a conference for 1,000 people for one working day this works out to be 145,000kg of CO2, the equivalent of driving 364,414 miles or charging 17,638,184 smartphones, that’s as much CO2 as circumnavigating the globe more than 14.5 times!

However, if an equivalent 1,000-person conference was held entirely online, the carbon impact would be significantly reduced by over 95%, to just 682kg.

As the public sector has shown when faced with the global crisis, we’re adaptive and innovative. We traded handshakes and complimentary refreshments for on-demand webinars and live Q&As while still being able to refine the sectors knowledge and inject a collaborative approach to learning, all while reducing carbon emissions generated by live events.

We’re committed to helping fight the global climate crisis with our competitions held through our virtual events by rewarding the winners by planting 300 trees in their name.
