Thousands more passengers travelling across Yorkshire will soon be able to take advantage of simpler, more flexible rail travel after the Government expanded Northern’s digital pay-as-you-go ticketing trials.
The scheme, which uses GPS-enabled technology through a smartphone app, automatically tracks journeys and calculates the cheapest available fare. Passengers no longer need to purchase tickets in advance or check in and out during their journey, helping to simplify rail travel and reduce ticketing errors.
Initially launched in 2025, the pilot programme was restricted to 2,000 users across two Northern routes: Leeds to Harrogate and Doncaster to Sheffield. Since then, more than 30,000 journeys have been completed using the technology, with passengers reporting high levels of satisfaction and praising the convenience of the system.
Following the success of the trial, restrictions on participant numbers have now been removed, allowing an unlimited number of passengers to use the service on both Yorkshire routes. The programme has also been expanded to include a third route in the East Midlands between Leicester and Nottingham via Derby.
The digital ticketing initiative forms part of wider rail reforms being introduced ahead of the creation of Great British Railways. Planned reforms include the rollout of additional pay-as-you-go schemes and the development of a single GBR website and mobile app, providing passengers with one place to buy tickets, check train times and claim Delay Repay compensation.
The technology is also designed to tackle fare evasion by ensuring travellers are charged the correct fare while protecting passengers who may inadvertently purchase the wrong ticket.
Rail Minister, Lord Peter Hendy, said:
“Buying a train ticket across much of Yorkshire is far too complicated, with the whole system long overdue an upgrade to bring it into the 21st century. The digital pay-as-you-go trials have been a huge success and by extending them, we’re making that convenience, accessibility and flexible for even more passengers.
“This is rail reform in action. We’re delivering straightforward, stress-free train travel across the North, supporting passengers, a key step in our mission to boost growth, jobs and homes as we work to set up Great British Railways.”
The Government says the expansion reflects its commitment to giving local authorities greater flexibility to develop integrated ticketing solutions that meet local needs, rather than imposing a uniform national model.
Alongside the Yorkshire and East Midlands trials, contactless bank card ticketing is also being introduced at more than 100 stations across the South East, helping integrate rail services with London’s airports, buses, Tube and tram networks. Officials estimate the improvements will simplify around 55 million journeys each year.
A £156 million investment in next-generation ticketing systems will further expand pay-as-you-go rail travel across Greater Manchester, the Midlands and the South East by 2027. The forthcoming GBR digital platform is expected to bring together journey planning, ticket purchasing and customer support into a single service.
For passengers across Yorkshire, the move marks another step towards a more straightforward, flexible and digitally connected railway.
