Following his return to the Cabinet, former Labour Party Leader Ed Miliband has set out his priorities for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
In a letter to his colleagues in the department, Miliband outlined how the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero will be at the heart of the government’s agenda, as it leads one of the Prime Minister’s five national missions. This particular mission will involve transforming Britain into a clean energy superpower with zero carbon electricity by 2030, whilst also accelerating the journey to net zero.
Opening his message to the department, Miliband said:
“I wanted to write to you personally to say what an honour and a privilege it is to have been appointed to this position, I am inspired to have the chance to lead the department and work with you all.
“The reason I’m so excited to have been appointed to this role is because it speaks directly to the twin passions that continue to motivate me. First, resolving the economic inequality that scars the country, and second tackling the climate crisis that imperils our world.”
Miliband also delved into the role of the department under him, which will be to deliver on their work to support the UK becoming energy independent, reducing energy bills, creating good jobs, and tackling the climate crisis. This will be done through a number of priorities, including:
- Taking back control of energy through GB Energy
- Upgrading Britain’s homes and cutting fuel poverty
- Standing up for consumers through energy system reform
- Creating good jobs in Britain’s industrial heartlands
- Leading on international climate action

Also set out in the letter was the plan for the department’s work to mobilise citizens, businesses, trade unions, civil society, and local government.
As he closed the letter, Miliband commented further on his joy at being offered the role, saying:
“Having been the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change from 2008 to 2010, arriving at the department feels like coming home. Back then, I saw first-hand the brilliant work that civil servants do and I know how hard you have worked on behalf of the country in the years since.”
