More than 200,000 potholes have been fixed or prevented across Wales since April last year, as the Welsh Government confirms significant progress on improving both local roads and the Strategic Road Network.
The latest figures show that councils and trunk road agencies have repaired or prevented potholes on over 400 miles of road surfaces, providing safer journeys for motorists and reducing long‑term maintenance pressures.
The Welsh Government’s Local Government Borrowing Initiative has enabled councils to repair or prevent around 171,000 potholes across 324 miles of local roads.
The funding has helped local authorities accelerate resurfacing work and tackle long‑standing defects affecting communities.
A total of 1,011 local road resurfacing schemes have been completed so far this financial year, with more schemes expected before year‑end.
One example – the A48 Redhill to Stormy Down scheme in Bridgend – is already delivering noticeable improvements for road users and residents.
On the Strategic Road Network, more than 30,000 potholes have been fixed or prevented across 65 miles of road, supported by Welsh Government investment.
Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, commented:
“Fixing our roads is a priority for this government.
“I am delighted with the fantastic progress that’s been made since April and there’s a lot more to come.”

“We have significantly increased our investment in road maintenance and preventative treatments this financial year to deliver improvements across both the strategic and local road networks.
“As well as extending the longevity of Welsh roads and critical infrastructure, this work is also helping to keep communities connected safely and sustainably which in turn will help benefit the economy.”
Key completed SRN schemes include:
- M4 J24 to J26 (Coldra to Malpas) – completed just before Christmas
- Further major resurfacing works scheduled for 2026, including:
- A55 Dobbs Hill to Ewloe
- A483 Beulah
In total, 1,035 resurfacing schemes - 1,011 local and 24 trunk road projects – have been delivered across Wales to date. These works are helping to reduce future repair needs, prevent road deterioration and improve the driving experience for local people, commuters and businesses.
