Newcastle City Council has announced that work has begun on the new Health Innovation Neighbourhood, that will promote longer, healthier lives around the city and the wider North East region.
The scheme is aiming to become a leader in the promotion of new ways of living that can considerably improve the standards of people’s lives, this being done through innovation and new spaces. Academic hubs will be complimented by innovative health facilities, community and leisure spaces, as well as new homes – 15% of which will be affordable.
The 1,250 new homes that will come as part of the project will used mixed tenure residential spaces to provide inter-generational living, later living, and supported living homes, alongside specialist housing for people living with dementia.

Leader of Newcastle City Council, Cllr Nick Kemp, said:
“This marks the start of an exciting major development for our city which brings new life to an important site while delivering world-class research and healthcare facilities, housing, green spaces, and leisure opportunities. This is just one of a number of development sites that can help transform our city and the lives of our residents.
“I’m really pleased to see work begin on the Health Innovation Neighbourhood and look forward to seeing it deliver the jobs, opportunities and growth that we all want to see in Newcastle as part of our commitment to achieving an inclusive economy that works for all our residents.”
Economic and infrastructure development is the driving force behind the innovation neighbourhood, with this being achieved by bringing health, research and community amenities together. One example of how this will be done is through digitally enhanced services, supporting local community needs, as well as areas for research and training.
Two sustainable transport hubs are also included within the approved redevelopment plan, with these supporting to the site’s new purposes and public areas.
Kim McGuinness, Mayor of the North East, also commented:
“More green affordable homes. That’s what will bring back to life the Newcastle General Hospital site that so many people will recognise.
“I’m delighted to support this world-class centre, developing cutting edge research and housing to help people live and age better.
“Everyone in our great North East should have access to a good home, I’m committed to making sure they do and to creating green jobs and opportunity as we build.”
