Parent looking after disabled child

Boost for parent carers in Scotland following funding boost

Around 3,000 additional parent carers who look after disabled or seriously ill children will be able to take a much‑needed break thanks to increased Scottish Government investment.

An extra £1.1 million has been awarded to Family Fund, a charity that provides financial support to parents and carers of disabled and seriously ill children. The funding will enable thousands more families who previously applied for assistance – but were unsuccessful due to high demand – to receive cash grants for short breaks.

These grants can be used for activities such as a day out, a family trip, or time away from daily caring responsibilities, giving carers an opportunity to rest and recharge.

The latest boost takes the total number of short breaks supported by the Scottish Government to more than 8,500 in 2025–2026. Officials say the investment will offer vital relief to parent carers who often balance caring responsibilities with the pressures of work, financial strain and emotional stress.

Shirley-Anne Somerville, Scottish Social Justice Secretary, said:

“Unpaid carers are the unsung heroes of so many people’s lives. They go above and beyond to provide comfort and dignity for thousands of people, and they do so with pride.

“But it can also be a demanding and tiring responsibility. I am proud that we are supporting more parent carers to look after themselves, helping them to reset with a short break away from the day-to-day routine of caring.

“They show dedication, love and support, not just over the festive period, but every single day. They have my utmost respect and gratitude for the work that they do.”

Family Fund has long highlighted the importance of short breaks for parents of disabled and seriously ill children, noting that regular respite improves family wellbeing, prevents burnout and helps carers continue providing the essential support their children need.

The Scottish Government has committed to improving outcomes for disabled children and their families, recognising the crucial role that unpaid carers play in the health and care system. Today’s announcement expands the reach of an already high‑demand programme and ensures more families receive help when they need it most.
