Yorkshire mayors come together to launch defence cluster

Mayors from across Yorkshire have joined forces to position the region at the forefront of the UK’s rapidly expanding defence and security sector, with the launch of a new industry-led initiative in Wakefield.

The Yorkshire Regional Defence & Security Cluster (YRDSC) was formally unveiled at a high-profile event attended by regional leaders, businesses, and academic partners. The initiative brings together David Skaith (York and North Yorkshire), Tracy Brabin (West Yorkshire), Oliver Coppard (South Yorkshire), and Luke Campbell (Hull and East Yorkshire) in a rare show of cross-regional collaboration.

The move reflects growing momentum behind the UK Government’s multi-billion-pound commitment to defence as a driver of economic growth, with Yorkshire leaders seeking to ensure the region secures a significant share of that investment.

The YRDSC aims to create a single, coordinated entry point for defence opportunities, helping Yorkshire compete more effectively at a national and international level.

By aligning priorities across mayoral authorities, the cluster is designed to give the region scale and coherence – two factors often cited as critical when engaging with major defence programmes and Ministry of Defence (MoD) procurement frameworks.

At its core, the initiative will bridge the gap between global defence opportunities and Yorkshire’s business ecosystem, which includes SMEs, advanced manufacturers, technology innovators, and leading universities.

One of the headline measures is free membership for Yorkshire-based organisations, aimed at lowering barriers to entry into a highly complex and competitive sector.

Through the cluster, members will gain:

  • Early access to MoD programmes and procurement pipelines
  • Visibility of tender opportunities and supply chain partnerships
  • Support navigating regulatory and commercial requirements
  • Connections to academic research and innovation expertise

This model is expected to particularly benefit small and medium-sized enterprises, which often struggle to engage directly with large-scale defence contracts.

Yorkshire’s industrial heritage and modern capabilities provide a strong foundation for the cluster’s ambitions. The region already boasts recognised strengths in:

  • Aerospace engineering
  • Advanced manufacturing
  • Autonomous and digital systems
  • Research and development through its universities

The YRDSC will look to consolidate and amplify these assets, creating a more integrated system that supports innovation, scale-up and commercialisation.

A key objective of the initiative is to connect public, private and academic sectors, ensuring ideas and capabilities can move more effectively from concept to deployment.

By fostering closer links between universities, businesses and government bodies, the cluster aims to:

  • Accelerate innovation in defence technologies
  • Improve access to funding and investment
  • Strengthen the regional supply chain
  • Enhance Yorkshire’s national and international profile

The launch comes at a time when defence and security spending is increasingly being framed as both a national security priority and an economic growth engine.

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin said:

“This is a major moment for Yorkshire, and a powerful statement of our intent to boost our world-class manufacturing and engineering sector, and harness it to bolster the UK defence and security sector.

“With the largest manufacturing workforce in the North and world-leading businesses, West Yorkshire has the skills and industrial heritage we need to supply our armed forces with the most cutting-edge technologies.

“By coming together as Mayors, we’ll provide the knowledge and strengths of our regions, to boost growth, jobs and contribute to the defence and security of the UK in this age of uncertainty.”

For Yorkshire, the creation of a unified cluster signals a clear intent to compete with established defence hubs elsewhere in the UK, while ensuring that local businesses and communities benefit from future investment.

With political alignment across all four mayoral authorities, the YRDSC represents one of the most coordinated economic development efforts the region has seen in recent years.
