West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker has launched an ambitious new Growth Plan aimed at transforming the region’s economy, creating 100,000 skilled jobs, and putting £8,600 back into the pockets of working people.
The West Midlands Growth Plan sets out a bold vision to grow the region’s £77 billion economy by more than £17 billion over the next decade. The plan focuses on raising living standards, tackling poverty, and delivering long-term prosperity for communities across the region.
At the heart of the plan is a commitment to create 100,000 good-quality jobs in high-growth sectors, including:
- Advanced engineering (electric vehicles and battery tech)
- Clean tech and energy
- Health and medical technology
- Digital and creative industries
- Professional and financial services
The plan also promises to get tens of thousands of residents into work, support everyday workers like carers, teachers, and bus drivers, and build 120,000 new homes to meet growing demand.
A key pillar of the Growth Plan is a £2.4 billion investment in transport infrastructure, including a new tram line to East Birmingham. This has already helped secure the £3 billion Sports Quarter regeneration project, backed by Birmingham City FC co-owner Tom Wagner.
The plan also builds on recent wins under Mayor Parker’s leadership, including:
- Hundreds of new social homes
- Over £10 million in business support
- Five million free bus journeys
- A flagship Investment Zone offering tax breaks for businesses
West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker said:
“Since being elected, I’ve wasted no time tackling the issues that matter most to local people – good jobs, affordable homes, reliable transport, and thriving businesses. These priorities are at the heart of everything I’m working for.
“The West Midlands is full of untapped talent and potential. We’ve got brilliant people, proud communities, and a legacy of invention and industry.
“We’re the biggest region outside London, with world-class universities, global brands and incredible talent. When the West Midlands thrives, the whole country benefits. My Growth Plan is about unlocking opportunity for everyone, in every place. It’s written with business, backed by government and will improve the lives of everyone.”

With six world-class universities, a young and diverse population, and a thriving entrepreneurial spirit, the West Midlands is poised to become a national leader in innovation and inclusive economic growth.
The Growth Plan also outlines steps to reduce poverty and accelerate progress towards net zero, ensuring that economic growth goes hand-in-hand with environmental sustainability and social equity.
