West Yorkshire Combined Authority has announced that significant investment is being committed to delivering significant training boosts for communities.
Thanks to £60 million from the Adult Skills Fund, councils and education providers to set to deliver a wide range of courses for adult learners and school leavers of all ages, as the Mayor commits to supporting those who require additional basic skills, as well as those seeking more advanced technical education.
This is being done with the aim of backing people to secure well-paid jobs in growing industries across the region, whilst also promoting West Yorkshire as a place where people can find their future. Investment into developing skills comes following the Mayor’s manifesto pledge to ‘build a region of learning and creativity’.
West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin said:
“To anyone collecting a result, finding their first job or looking for better-paid work, my message is simple – you can find your future here in West Yorkshire.
“Because of devolution, we and our partners can equip you with the skills you need to succeed, with a laser focus on helping you secure a real, well-paid job in the local labour market.
“For our economy to succeed and thrive, we need everyone in it to succeed and thrive. That’s why we’re building a region of learning and creativity, where everyone can fulfil their potential.”
Almost £50 million will be split between colleges across West Yorkshire, whilst around £7 million will be allocated between the five district councils in the region. Alongside this, specialist training providers will benefit from £4.5 million of backing to tackle labour shortages, including in essential jobs such as bus driving, construction, and healthcare.
Procurement that was recently withdrawn is also to be repurposed to support any gaps that may emerge in adult skills provision from the beginning of next year, with this providing an additional £7 million.
