More than two million bus journeys have been taken by young people across Wales since the introduction of the £1 bus fare scheme in September 2025, highlighting the success of the Welsh Government initiative aimed at making public transport more affordable and accessible.
The scheme, which will run until the end of August 2026, allows young people aged 5 to 21 to travel on participating bus services for a £1 single fare, with a £3 day ticket also available. It is designed to help young people access education, employment, training and leisure opportunities while encouraging the use of public transport.
Initially launched on 1 September 2025, the discounted fares were made available to 16 to 21‑year‑olds who hold a mytravelpass, covering journeys within Wales and on some cross‑border services.
The offer was then significantly expanded from 3 November 2025, when the £1 single fare and £3 day ticket were extended to children aged 5 to 15. Younger passengers do not require a pass to benefit from the scheme, making it simple for families to access affordable travel.
Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, said:
“It’s fantastic to see so many young people taking advantage of cheaper bus fares.
“We know that the cost of travel is often a barrier for young people, especially in rural areas, so I am delighted that our investment is making travel as accessible and affordable as possible with the scheme already making a real difference to young people's lives across Wales.”

With millions of journeys already made, the scheme is helping to shape travel habits at an early age while delivering practical benefits to families and communities across Wales.
