Millions of people across the UK are set to benefit from improved access to jobs, education and public services, thanks to a £104 million funding boost announced by the government.
The funding, delivered through the Local Transport Grant, will be shared with communities outside England’s major cities, empowering local authorities to invest in transport schemes that matter most to their residents.
This latest investment supports the government’s Plan for Change, aimed at driving growth, improving connectivity, and creating safer, more inclusive streets.
The funding gives councils the flexibility to develop and deliver transport improvements tailored to local needs. Potential schemes include:
- Introducing zero-emission buses
- Enhancing accessibility for disabled and elderly passengers
- Reducing congestion in busy areas
- Improving street safety with better lighting and crossings for pedestrians and cyclists
The government has confirmed individual allocations for each local authority, with significant uplifts for regions including the North West, Yorkshire and Humber, East Midlands and West Midlands.
Heidi Alexander, Transport Secretary, said:
“Good transport connections are the foundation of thriving communities, which is why we’re backing local authorities to transform journeys for millions of people across England.
“This investment will help councils to improve transport for local people – from cleaner buses to safer cycling routes – connecting communities with jobs, education and essential services.
“By putting resources directly into the hands of local leaders, we’re ensuring every part of the country benefits from better transport links that support economic growth and provide opportunity – all part of our Plan for Change.”

The LTG will help councils manage and deliver projects that improve everyday journeys—whether to work, school, shops or essential services. By focusing on towns and rural communities, the funding aims to grow local economies and ensure that transport improvements reach areas often overlooked in national infrastructure plans.
This £104 million boost follows the government’s £2.2 billion commitment to provide multi-year funding certainty for local transport, enabling long-term planning and delivery.
The investment marks a significant milestone in the UK’s journey toward greener, safer and more accessible transport, giving communities the tools to shape their own futures and reduce reliance on private cars.
