An electric car being recharged

Government outlines plans to improve EV charging nationwide

Electric vehicle owners across the UK will soon find it easier and cheaper to charge at home, thanks to new government plans announced on 29 October 2025 aimed at making EV charging fairer for renters and those without private driveways.

The proposals include mandating EV chargepoints in new covered car parks and consulting on removing planning permission for discreet cross-pavement charging gullies. The government will also be cutting red tape and speeding up applications for home charging installations

These changes could save drivers up to £250 in application fees and give more people access to domestic electricity rates, allowing EVs to run for as little as 2p per mile—the equivalent of London to Birmingham for just £2.50.

The government will work with Ofgem to:

  • Ensure fair public charging costs
  • Protect tenants from being overcharged by landlords
  • Improve connection quality and speed for public charging infrastructure

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander commented:

“Wherever you park your car, we’re making it fairer, easier, and cheaper to make the switch to electric.

“These reforms will improve infrastructure for the EV revolution, increase chargepoints across the country and open up affordable home charging to thousands more households.

“It’s good news for drivers and a big boost for the growing British EV industry – cutting costs and supporting jobs to deliver our Plan for Change.”

The reforms build on the success of the £650 million Electric Car Grant (ECG), which offers up to £3,750 off 39 EV models and has already helped 25,000 drivers make the switch.

The announcement follows a £25 million scheme to support local authorities with cross-pavement charging solutions, as well as a £381 million investment to install 100,000+ public chargers across England

With 86,021 chargers already available and the UK ranked #1 in Europe’s EV market in 2024, the government is tackling charging anxiety and upfront costs to accelerate the EV transition.

A consultation will be launched shortly to shape how these reforms are implemented, ensuring industry input and community benefit.
