Bedford community groups encouraged to take up funding

Small businesses, community groups, and non-profit organisations are being invited to apply for funding to improve the high street in Bedford.

Bedford Borough Council’s grant, part of the High Street Heritage Action Zone Scheme, will offer up to £1,500 per project. This will allow groups to run events and projects that celebrate the heritage of Bedford. Creative workshops, arts and crafts, storytelling, music and dance, audio and film, as well as cookery, are all part of these projects.

Portfolio Holder for Town Centre and Planning, Councillor Henry Vann, said:

“The Community Grant Scheme is about supporting community groups, businesses and non-profit organisations and others to share the story of Bedford High Street. There’s a great deal to learn about our local heritage and history and we’ve seen that there’s a huge appetite from residents and visitors to find out more.

“From workshops to performance, we want to hear your creative ideas for commemorating Bedford High Street and the many, varied histories of the people of Bedford.”

Schemes such as this are also being funded by the government’s Levelling Up Fund, with an emphasis of regenerating towns across the country. Pride of place, greater investment, and improved opportunities are all some of the ways that the government aims to contribute to its mission of reducing the amount of social and financial deprivation in the United Kingdom.

Ep 51. Diversity, equality and representation with Stuart Love, Chief Executive of Westminster City Council

It is the role of local government leaders to make the decisions that will best deliver for the communities that they represent. That much is obvious.

How can they do this, however, if they are not accurately representative of those very communities?

Great strides have been made in ensuring that everyone, regardless of their ethnicity, race, gender, or social class is represented in some way within local government. Chief Executive of Westminster City Council Stuart Love joins host Dan Benn to talk about why this work is important, the different work that is being done in Westminster, and how his background influences his stance on equality and diversity.
