Southwark leader elected chair of London Councils
Councilor Peter John OBE has been elected as chair of the London Councils network.
Cllr John was elected at London Council’s annual general meeting, held yesterday. He is Leader of Southwark Council and was formerly deputy chair of London Councils and executive member for business, skills and Brexit.
He said: "London Councils has an essential role to play in ensuring that the collective work and expertise of the boroughs is harnessed effectively in the service of London and Londoners.”
Cllr John added that ensuring London’s services are sustainably funded is a key priority — particularly with children’s services and adult social care which “are under incredible pressure in the capital.”
"The boroughs' unique position as servants and representatives of London’s local communities gives us a vital role in making London’s success work for everyone," he added.
Cllr John will succeed Labour’s Claire Kober, who stepped down as Haringey leader at the last election.
The London Councils network is a cross-party organisation which represents the 32 London boroughs and the City of London Corporation.
