Snow warnings in place across UK

Heavy snow is causing severe disruption across the UK, with a rare red Met Office warning in place across Wales.

Many roads have hazardous conditions, and parts of the M4 and M50 were closed for a time. Rail travel has also been disrupted, with a revised timetable in place on South West Trains and passengers urged to check before they travel.

There have been widespread school closures, including 1,200 in Wales. 10,000 Welsh households have also been affected by power cuts. The Met Office is recommending that all non-essential travel should be avoided, with up to 30cm of snow and blizzards have been forecast.

Amber warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and many parts of England. Flights have also been cancelled, with over 70 cancelled at Heathrow. The Highways Agency has put road ploughs and snow blowers on stand-by to clear major routes.
