Record £50m innovation deal to back new generation of tech pioneers in West Midlands

West Midlands Combined Authority has announced the region’s biggest ever innovation deal, with a landmark £50 million government investment to accelerate cutting‑edge technologies, support high‑growth businesses and drive economic renewal.

The funding, which is delivered through the new Local Innovation Partnerships Fund, will back a new generation of innovators across advanced manufacturing, health and life sciences, and creative immersive technologies, helping transform big ideas into commercial products that improve lives, create jobs and grow the regional economy.

The investment will support the West Midlands’ internationally recognised engineering and research capabilities, enabling pioneering businesses, academics and entrepreneurs to:

  • scale up new products and processes
  • access specialist facilities and talent
  • speed up commercialisation
  • attract follow‑on private investment

The Local Innovation Partnerships Fund is backed by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology through UK Research and Innovation. It brings together academic, civic and business leaders in a “triple‑helix” partnership model to accelerate innovation and economic growth.

Aligned with the region’s West Midlands Growth Plan, three flagship projects are expected to be supported through the initial investment. These cluster‑driven initiatives will strengthen high‑potential innovation hubs, scale emerging technologies, create new pathways from research to market, and boost productivity and advanced skills across the region.

The region’s innovation deal is expected to deliver major economic benefits, including:

  • £190 million in additional private investment unlocked
  • 2,000 jobs created or safeguarded across high‑value sectors
  • £700 million added to the regional economy

The £50m announcement comes just a week after the West Midlands Combined Authority Board approved a further £282 million of investment to grow the region’s economy – underlining the scale of the Mayor’s plans to accelerate innovation, skills and infrastructure.

West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker said:

“This record amount of funding shows government recognises what we’ve always known – that this is the home of innovation.

“You can see it everywhere. Two centuries on from Watt and Boulton’s steam engine, a new generation of trailblazers here is at the forefront of a tech revolution that’s unlocking smarter healthcare, better diagnostics and the transition to cleaner energy.

“My job is to keep that spirit alive by backing their talent and investing in cutting-edge research to turn bold ideas into real-world solutions. All while creating the jobs, opportunities and growth that will improve people’s lives across the West Midlands and beyond. That’s exactly what my Growth Plan is about and with government backing we’re making it happen.”

Together, the investments are central to delivering the West Midlands Growth Plan, the Government’s Industrial Strategy, and new opportunities for businesses, communities and young people.

The Local Innovation Partnerships Fund aims to address long‑standing gaps between research excellence and commercial success – a challenge often referred to as the UK’s “valley of death” in innovation.
