A major new partnership designed to improve health outcomes while boosting economic growth has been launched in Northern Ireland.
The Academic, Health and Economic Partnership, a collaborative initiative led by the Department of Health and the Department for the Economy, aims to accelerate the development and adoption of healthcare innovations by bringing together health leaders, universities, industry partners, government organisations and local communities.
The partnership was officially unveiled at NICON 2026 and is intended to create a stronger link between Northern Ireland's world-class research capabilities and real-world healthcare delivery. By fostering collaboration across sectors, AH&EP hopes to ensure promising innovations are developed, tested and scaled more effectively across health and social care services.
The new partnership will focus on identifying key health challenges facing Northern Ireland and supporting the development of innovative solutions to address them. It will also work to speed up the adoption of proven technologies and approaches throughout the health and social care system.
By creating a more streamlined route from discovery to implementation, the initiative is expected to help improve patient outcomes, enhance service delivery and support investment in the region's growing life sciences sector.
The launch comes as Northern Ireland looks to strengthen its reputation as a leading destination for health and life sciences innovation, building on increasing interest from investors and global healthcare companies.
Mike Farrar, Permanent Secretary at the Northern Ireland Department of Health, said:
"Northern Ireland faces significant health challenges, from increasing demand for services to the growing burden of long-term conditions. At the same time, we have exceptional assets: a single integrated health and social care system, internationally recognised research expertise, innovative businesses and committed partners across the public, private and voluntary sectors.
“The AH&EP brings these strengths together behind a shared ambition. Our goal is simple: to improve health outcomes for our population by making it easier to develop, test, adopt and scale innovation. If we get this right, patients will benefit from better care, staff will have access to more effective solutions, and Northern Ireland will be recognised internationally as a place where innovation can thrive and deliver real impact."

The AH&EP represents a significant step towards aligning healthcare innovation with economic development objectives. By bringing together expertise from academia, healthcare, industry and government, the initiative aims to create an environment where new ideas can move more quickly from research laboratories into frontline services.
Leaders hope the partnership will not only improve healthcare outcomes for citizens but also attract investment, create high-value jobs and reinforce Northern Ireland's position within the global life sciences market.
