Homeowners across the North East are being given a new opportunity to explore the benefits of solar panels and battery storage through a scheme launched by Kim McGuinness, Mayor of the North East.
Delivered by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority in partnership with Switch Together, the initiative is designed to make renewable energy more accessible and affordable for residents throughout the region. By using a group-buying model, the scheme aims to secure competitive prices from trusted and independently vetted installers, helping homeowners make informed decisions about investing in solar power and battery storage.
The programme supports the region’s wider ambitions to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources. It also comes at a time when many households are seeking practical ways to manage rising energy costs and reduce their reliance on traditional energy supplies.
Solar panels can generate renewable electricity throughout the year, helping households lower their energy bills, while battery storage systems enable residents to store excess power produced during daylight hours for use later in the day. Together, these technologies can help homeowners maximise self-generated energy and reduce reliance on the national grid.
The scheme offers residents access to trusted installers and impartial information, enabling them to assess whether solar panels and battery storage are suitable for their property. Importantly, there is no obligation to proceed with an installation.
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said:
"We must do what we can to help people cut their energy bills. This will give homeowners practical ways to reduce their bills and make their homes more energy efficient.
"As we work to build a greener, fairer North East, we want to improve lives for everyone in our region by helping local people take advantage of technologies that can cut carbon emissions while putting more money back into their pockets."

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to support households with energy efficiency improvements while delivering environmental benefits across the region. By making renewable energy technologies easier to access, the scheme aims to help more residents reduce costs, lower carbon emissions and contribute to a more sustainable future for the North East.
