A cutting-edge Operational Control Centre has officially opened at West Midlands Metro’s Wednesbury depot, providing a major boost to the region’s expanding tram network and strengthening the safety, reliability and efficiency of services across the West Midlands.
The state-of-the-art facility will serve as the new operational hub for the network, bringing tram operations together with the wider regional transport system. Equipped with advanced technology, the centre makes full use of recently upgraded CCTV systems at Metro stops and onboard trams, significantly enhancing security and real-time monitoring capabilities.
The opening comes as preparations continue for the launch of the long-awaited Metro extension linking Wednesbury and Dudley town centre. Passenger services are expected to begin later this year following the completion of safety testing and driver training.
Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, said:
“As we prepare to open the extension to Dudley town centre, this new world-class control room ensures we deliver a safer, more reliable and more efficient Metro network for the thousands of people who rely on our trams every day.
“Modernising the depot also means we are fully equipped to expand services when the next extensions to Digbeth, Merry Hill and the new Birmingham Sports Quarter site open in the coming years.”
The new control centre forms part of a wider transformation of the Wednesbury depot. At its heart is a large-scale digital data wall that offers three times the coverage of the previous system, giving operators enhanced visibility across the tram network, surrounding roads, public spaces and connected transport services.
Advanced heat mapping and video analytics technology has also been introduced, allowing staff to identify crowd build-ups and detect suspicious behaviour in real time. This enables faster deployment of resources and quicker responses to operational or security-related incidents.
Alongside the new control room, a dedicated track connection has been added to provide direct access to the Wednesbury to Dudley route. The investment is designed to improve the resilience of tram operations while supporting the network’s continued expansion.
The redevelopment also includes a significantly enlarged stabling area capable of accommodating the additional trams required for future extensions. Improved facilities for drivers and operational staff have also been delivered as part of the programme.
The depot expansion has been funded by Transport for West Midlands, part of the West Midlands Combined Authority, with construction work undertaken by Midland Metro Alliance.
As the region prepares for the next phase of Metro growth, the new OCC represents a key piece of infrastructure that will help support future extensions to Dudley, Digbeth, Merry Hill and the Birmingham Sports Quarter, while ensuring passengers benefit from a safer, smarter and more connected transport network.
