The Government has announced the creation of three new cross-government taskforces within the Office for the Prime Minister & Cabinet, aimed at addressing some of the most pressing issues facing communities across the UK.
The new taskforces will bring together ministers and departments from across Whitehall to tackle long-standing challenges around the cost of living, public ownership of essential services and the renewal of local communities. Their work will be guided by priorities outlined by the Prime Minister during a recent Cabinet meeting.
Leading the initiative will be First Secretary of State, Louise Haigh, who will oversee efforts across central and local government, working closely with regional Mayors as the Government continues its programme of devolving powers from Westminster.
The Government says its immediate focus will be on tackling everyday consumer rip-offs, reversing the decline of town centres and addressing concerns over the performance and affordability of privatised utilities.
Cost of Living Taskforce
The Cost of Living Taskforce will focus on the financial pressures facing households and families across the country.
Ministers say action has already been taken through measures including reductions in bus fares, support for energy bills and efforts to eliminate subscription traps. However, the new taskforce will examine deeper structural issues that continue to impact household finances and which have often fallen outside the scope of existing policy interventions.
First Secretary of State Louise Haigh said:
"The Prime Minister has been clear that the government’s priorities are the public’s priorities. This is about putting people back in control of the things that matter most to them and ensuring that the everyday essentials are more affordable and more accountable.”
Based in the Office for the Prime Minister and Cabinet, the taskforces will be fully integrated with No10 and across government to deliver real change.
Public Control Taskforce
The Public Control Taskforce will examine how greater public control can be applied across four key sectors: housing, water, energy and transport.
Government ministers argue that years of privatisation have contributed to rising costs and reduced accountability in essential services. The taskforce will explore options for reform, including market interventions and changes designed to strengthen public oversight while improving affordability for households.
Officials say the aim is to reshape how these services operate so they deliver better outcomes for communities while restoring public confidence.
Community Renewal Taskforce
The Community Renewal Taskforce will work with local leaders to develop strategies aimed at revitalising high streets, improving neighbourhood environments and supporting local economic growth.
The Government says many communities have experienced years of decline, with deteriorating town centres and visible environmental challenges affecting the quality of life for residents.
Rather than replicating previous regeneration programmes, ministers say the taskforce will focus on empowering local communities to develop and deliver solutions tailored to their own areas, supporting growth and renewal in every part of the country.
With the three taskforces now established, the Government is positioning them as a central part of its mission to tackle everyday pressures, improve public services and strengthen communities across the UK.
