Welsh communities are seeing the benefits of £1.1 billion in defence investment, according to the UK Government’s newly published Defence Footprint booklet, which highlights the economic and employment impact of defence spending across the UK.
The funding supported 3,900 jobs in Wales last year alone, equating to £340 per person, and reflects the Government’s commitment to increasing defence spending to 2.6% of GDP by 2027, with a target of 3% in the next Parliament.
Wales’ defence sector is thriving, with significant operations in armoured vehicle production, drone manufacturing, and cyber security stretching from Anglesey to Cardiff. These investments are creating high-quality careers, supporting advanced manufacturing, and positioning Wales as a hub for defence innovation.
The ripple effect of defence spending is felt across the Welsh economy, supporting local supply chains, research and development, and skilled employment in sectors vital to national security and economic resilience.
Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens commented:
“The defence industry is a vital part of the Welsh economy and provides thousands of high-quality jobs across every part of the country.
“Each of the Ministry of Defence’s top five suppliers has a footprint here, so Wales is well placed to benefit from the UK Government’s increase in defence spending.
“Our number one mission is kickstarting economic growth and by investing in the defence sector, we are safeguarding our national security, creating new jobs and putting more money in people’s pockets.”

The investment aligns with the UK Government’s Plan for Change, recognising defence as both a security priority and a driver of regional growth. It also strengthens the case for further devolution of powers and targeted investment in Welsh infrastructure and skills.
As defence spending continues to rise, Welsh communities are set to benefit from more jobs, greater innovation, and stronger local economies.
