Combined authority to invest in new accessible bus fleet

Bus passengers with additional mobility needs across West Yorkshire are set to benefit from a £6.5 million investment in a brand‑new fleet of fully accessible, ultra‑low emission buses.

At a meeting of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, regional leaders are expected to approve plans to replace the entire AccessBus fleet, consisting of 33 vehicles, which provide vital door‑to‑door transport for older people, disabled passengers and those with extra mobility requirements.

AccessBus plays a crucial role in helping people who face barriers to using conventional public transport reach shops, healthcare, services and community facilities, supporting independence and social inclusion across the region.

The new vehicles will be manufactured to a bespoke accessibility‑led specification, featuring low‑floor access and a redesigned interior layout that offers significantly more space for wheelchairs and mobility equipment than standard buses. The upgrade will also reduce emissions, supporting West Yorkshire’s wider clean air and climate ambitions.

The replacement programme is needed as the current AccessBus vehicles approach the end of their operational lives, with the existing fleet aged between 11 and 18 years.

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin said:

“Having the help you need to get around is not just something that’s nice to have – it is a right that everyone should have.

“This investment will allow us to continue helping those who struggle to get to the places they need to go.

“AccessBus is a part of our Weaver Network, creating a greener, better-connected West Yorkshire.”

Under the proposals, the new fleet will continue to be operated by a contracted service provider, responsible for staffing, storage and maintenance. Passengers will still be able to book collections and drop‑offs via the Combined Authority, ensuring continuity of the door‑to‑door service.

The plans are due to be considered by the full West Yorkshire Combined Authority at its meeting on Thursday 22 January, and, if approved, will mark a major step forward in providing safer, cleaner and more inclusive transport for residents with mobility needs.
