Sadiq Khan: London stands united against terror
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has today vowed that the capital will stand united after the terrorist incident on Saturday evening that killed seven people and injured many more.
In a statement yesterday, he also announced that a vigil would be held at Potters Fields Park, just around the corner from the restaurants and pubs near London Bridge where the attack took place, at 6pm today.
Those who are not able to attend have been asked to observe a minute’s silence at 6.20pm to show solidarity and thought for those who lost their lives.
The British Red Cross has now launched another fund to help the victims and their affected families, following the same successful initiative launched after last month’s terrorist attack in Manchester.
“As Londoners, we will stand together in solidarity to remember those who were killed or injured in this horrific terror attack,” said the mayor. “There can be no justification or excuses for these barbaric, cowardly attacks.
“By standing together as a city we will send a powerful message here and around the world - that Londoners will never be cowed by terrorism.”
Khan also expressed his “deepest gratitude” on behalf of all Londoners for the speed and bravery of the response by the emergency services in the capital.
“Our city – the greatest city in the world – will never forget the innocent victims who lost their lives,” he concluded. “As a city, we will stand united against terror.”
Leader of Manchester City Council Sir Richard Leese also said that Manchester’s thoughts and sympathies were with London and those who had lost loved ones.
“As a truly great city, I know that London will show strength and unity in the face of the terrorists who seek to sow division and fear by their despicable acts,” Leese offered.
The London attack comes just two weeks after the attack in Manchester that took place after an Ariana Grande concert.
“While it is important that people remain vigilant, it is vital that we do not allow those who hate our way of life and our solidarity to prevail,” Leese added.
Ben Houchen, the Tees Valley mayor, also tweeted: “My thoughts and prayers are with the people affected by the abhorrent attacks in London.
“I know I speak on behalf of everyone in Tees Valley when I say that we stand side by side with you.”
