Mayor warns London schools could lose out under new funding formula
London mayor, Sadiq Khan, has warned that the new national funding formula for schools, introduced in the Queen’s Speech, could mean that London schools would receive less money.
Under the existing system, London schools receive the largest proportion of the dedicated schools grant, which could be lost under the new formula.
“The capital is at risk of losing funding under any new model,” Khan said during a question time appearance before the London Assembly. He added that this could undo the “great progress” London schools have made with extra investment.
Labour’s Khan, who was elected as mayor last month, said that evidence submitted to the schools funding consultation by the Greater London Authority had already led to progress, such as ministers acknowledging the challenge posed in London by the high number of families moving between boroughs.
He added that if the new funding formula fails to meet the needs of London schools, he will seek a meeting with education secretary Nicky Morgan and London Councils over the issue.
