Free schools receive good Ofsted ratings

Three-quarters of the first free schools to be inspected have been judged as good or outstanding.

Ofsted found that six free schools required improvement and one – Discovery New School, in West Sussex – was deemed inadequate. Out of all state schools, 79% were judged good or outstanding, with 19% requiring improvement and 3% inadequate.

There are now 81 free schools operating, with a further 200 planned to open beginning in September.

Education secretary Michael Gove said: “Too often the best schools are only available to the rich who can afford to go private or pay for an expensive house in the catchment area of a good school. Free schools are giving all parents, not just the rich, the choice of a high-quality school with great teaching and strong discipline.”
