37 flood warnings issued

The Environment Agency has issued 37 flood warnings, with particular concern for Somerset, Dorset and Devon, as heavy rain continues in southern Britain. 144 alerts of possible flooding have also been issued.

Areas affected are checking their flood defences on rising rivers and sandbags have been issued inTewkesbury, Gloucestershire.

The Environment Agency said in a statement: “There is still a risk of flooding across many parts ofEnglandandWaleswith particular focus onSomerset, Dorset andDevon.

“River flows are high after this weekend's rainfall and we are keeping a close watch on river levels as well as checking defences and clearing any potential blockages to reduce the risk of flooding.”

Large parts of the country are still in drought, and the Government has urged everyone to conserve water, despite the threat of flooding.
