British AI startups developing technologies that could transform daily life and strengthen national security are set to receive major backing through the new Sovereign AI Unit, a £500 million government initiative designed to support the UK’s most ambitious AI founders and ensure the future of artificial intelligence is built in Britain.
Announced by the Technology Secretary, the Sovereign AI Unit represents a first‑of‑its‑kind national effort to invest directly in high‑potential AI companies, helping them scale quickly and compete globally while keeping expertise, decision‑making and economic value in the UK.
AI is widely recognised as the defining technology of this era, with implications for healthcare, economic growth and national security. Ministers say that for the UK to shape its own future, it must build strong homegrown AI capability by backing the best innovators to develop and grow their businesses domestically.
The government argues that the UK is well placed to succeed, with world‑class universities, leading research institutions, a strong talent base and a thriving entrepreneurial culture. Sovereign AI is positioned as a clear signal that Britain intends not just to participate in the AI revolution, but to lead it.
Unlike traditional government programmes, the Sovereign AI Unit is designed to operate at the pace of the AI industry, functioning more like a top‑tier venture capital fund with state backing.
It will invest directly in promising UK AI startups, move quickly, cut through bureaucracy and provide hands‑on support to help companies scale. The aim is to stop world‑class ideas being forced overseas as they grow, a challenge that has previously seen UK innovations migrate to foreign tech giants.
The first company to receive equity investment from the Sovereign AI Unit is Callosum, an AI infrastructure startup developing a new class of systems to support next‑generation artificial intelligence.
Alongside this, six further startups will gain access to the UK’s AI Research Resource supercomputer network, placing some of the nation’s most powerful compute capacity behind emerging innovators. The companies are Prima Mente, Cosine, Cursive, Doubleword, Twig Bio and Odyssey, with Sovereign AI holding rights of first refusal on potential future investments for some participants.
The technologies being developed range from tackling devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, to building advanced AI systems and cutting‑edge computer chip technologies.
Sovereign AI support extends well beyond capital. Backed companies will gain access to resources typically reserved for the largest global tech firms.
This includes fully funded use of the UK’s largest AI supercomputers, with up to one million GPU hours available per startup, enabling firms to train advanced models and run complex simulations.
Companies will also benefit from fast‑tracked access to global talent, with visa decisions made within one working day and an initial allocation of 10 cost‑free visas for leading international researchers. In addition, startups will receive hands‑on government support to navigate data access, early procurement opportunities, product validation and emerging regulatory approaches.
By backing AI companies at an early stage, the government aims to keep technical expertise, strategic decision‑making and economic rewards within the UK. Ministers say this will help reduce reliance on a small number of overseas tech firms for critical AI capabilities, strengthening both economic resilience and national security.
Sovereign AI is also currently in discussions with around 30 additional firms over access to the AIRR supercomputer network, signalling further expansion of the programme.
As part of a £282 million Sovereign AI offer to support cutting‑edge research and development, the Unit has also launched its first funding call to create new datasets and shared research assets that help AI companies move faster while building in the UK.
Liz Kendall, Technology Secretary, said:
“We believe in Britain and we are betting on Britain. We are backing our brilliant innovators and entrepreneurs so we seize the benefits of AI to reshape Britain for the benefit of all.
“Sovereign AI is unlike anything government has ever done before. Its unique approach will help break down the barriers that have too often held back British enterprise and innovation. This is how we ensure Britain’s economic prosperity and national security in the modern age.
“My message to British founders and innovators is clear - we will ensure you never have to choose between your ambition and your home, because Britain will give you both.”

The programme will work closely with the government’s Global Talent Taskforce to attract elite researchers, while ensuring the benefits of AI are felt across the whole country. From May, Sovereign AI will begin a tour of UK cities to engage directly with communities and demonstrate how AI innovation can support growth, jobs and opportunity nationwide.
The government said Sovereign AI represents a decisive shift towards active, strategic support for AI innovation, ensuring Britain remains one of the best places in the world to build, deploy and benefit from artificial intelligence.
By combining capital, compute, talent and regulatory support, ministers say the UK can help its most promising AI companies start here, scale here and win globally – securing long‑term prosperity and technological leadership for the country.
