Rhun ap Iorwerth has officially become the new First Minister of Wales, following a formal swearing‑in ceremony held in Cardiff today.
His appointment follows Plaid Cymru’s historic victory in last week’s Senedd elections. Rhun ap Iorwerth was sworn in by The Hon Mrs Justice Mary Stacey DBE during a formal ceremony, officially marking the start of his leadership of the Welsh Government.
The appointment completes a rapid transition, with the new First Minister assuming office on the same day he secured the support of Senedd members.
Rhun ap Iorwerth’s appointment is notable as he becomes the first First Minister to represent a North Wales constituency.
He was elected to represent Bangor Conwy Môn in the Senedd elections, bringing with him a regional perspective that has not previously held the top leadership role in Welsh government. The nomination and subsequent appointment mark a significant moment in Welsh political history, both for its timing and for the representation it brings.
Becoming First Minister directly after a successful election underlines the strength of political support for Rhun ap Iorwerth and signals the start of a new phase for the Welsh Government.
As First Minister, Rhun ap Iorwerth will be responsible for leading the Welsh Government, setting policy direction, and working with partners across the UK and beyond. His priorities are expected to focus on key areas such as public services, economic development, and regional growth, although further details on his agenda are likely to follow in the coming days.
In his speech to the Senedd, the new First Minster said:
“It is the greatest privilege of my life to be elected First Minister in a nation that means so much to me.
“I'm eager to repay the trust that the people in Wales have placed in us and to achieve the change that people have stated so clearly they wish to see.
“Something has stirred in the soul of Wales. A new confidence, a new hope. A new broader horizon, never to be narrowed again.
“From this historic moment onwards every person in every part of our nation can know that the government of Wales is their government.
“My promise to everyone is that I will lead without prejudice or presumption. I will never take this privilege for granted.”
