Millions of bus passengers across Strathclyde can now benefit from the £2 Bus Fare Cap, as the Scottish Government expands its flagship initiative to make public transport more affordable and accessible across Scotland.
The latest phase of the scheme covers participating bus services throughout Glasgow, Ayrshire, Inverclyde, Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, and Dunbartonshire, helping residents reduce travel costs while encouraging greater use of public transport.
The expansion represents the next major milestone in the Scottish Government’s ambition to introduce a nationwide £2 bus fare cap, following the successful rollout across the Highlands and Islands.
The move comes as many households continue to face financial pressures amid the ongoing cost of living challenge. By capping fares at £2 on participating routes, ministers hope to make everyday journeys more affordable while supporting greener, more sustainable travel choices.
Speaking about the rollout, First Minister John Swinney said:
"The cost of living remains one of the biggest challenges facing households across Scotland, so making public transport more affordable is all the more an important.
"The launch of the £2 Bus Fare Cap across Strathclyde means that more people can get where they need to go with more money in their pocket – that is clear action to help people save money during a cost of living crisis.
"Following the successful rollout across the Highlands and Islands, this expansion is the next major step towards our ambition of delivering a national rollout of £2 bus fares, ensuring they apply in every area in Scotland.
"Bus travel remains the most widely used form of public transport in Scotland and we are working to make it as affordable, accessible and attractive as possible. This is vital to grow the economy, travel sustainably and protect the planet.”
The Scottish Government has worked closely with bus operators, regional transport partnerships, and delivery organisations to deliver the scheme across Strathclyde, which represents a significant proportion of Scotland’s population.
Transport leaders believe the initiative will not only reduce travel costs for passengers but also help boost bus usage, cut congestion, and support Scotland’s wider environmental objectives.
As momentum builds towards a national rollout, the expansion into Strathclyde marks a significant step in making public transport a more affordable option for communities across the west of Scotland.
