Welsh businesses aiming to reduce their carbon footprint are set to benefit from an additional £10 million in funding, as the Welsh Government’s Green Business Loan Scheme is extended to £20 million and available until 2028.
Delivered by the Development Bank of Wales, the scheme offers tailored financial support to help businesses invest in energy efficiency and low-carbon technologies, including heat pumps, ventilation systems, waste management solutions, and building fabric improvements.
Since its launch in March 2023, over 30 businesses have already benefitted, with forecasted carbon savings of more than 28,000 tonnes over the lifetime of their projects.
One standout example is Thorncliffe Building Supplies, based in Mold, which received a £3.2 million loan to install a new wash plant and water treatment system, significantly reducing its reliance on landfill. As one of North Wales’ largest independent builder’s merchants, Thorncliffe operates across five sites and employs 265 staff, under the leadership of Deborah and Tim Harper.
Rebecca Evans, Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, commented:
“This £10 million extension to the Green Business Loan Scheme demonstrates the Welsh Government’s commitment to supporting businesses on their journey to net zero. We are ensuring even more firms can access the support they need to reduce their carbon footprint while strengthening their competitiveness.
“With over 30 businesses already benefitting and forecasted carbon savings of more than 28,000 tonnes, there is clearly a strong appetite for sustainable innovation amongst Welsh enterprises who are supporting our ambition to grow the economy.”

The scheme’s simple application process makes it accessible to a wide range of businesses, supporting Wales’ commitment to net zero and sustainable growth. It aligns with broader efforts to decarbonise the economy, promote green innovation, and ensure that businesses of all sizes can play a role in tackling climate change.
With funding now extended, more Welsh businesses are encouraged to apply and take advantage of this opportunity to cut emissions, reduce energy costs, and future-proof their operations.
