Public spaces across London are being improved thanks to millions of pounds worth of Mayoral funding.
With £12.4 million of investment from the Mayor’s Civic Partnership Programme, projects in five London boroughs are being developed to transform public spaces and deliver environmental improvements.
Over the course of three years, 28,000 square metres of improved public space in Brent, Redbridge, Hackney, Lewisham and Croydon will be developed. This will see 220 trees being planted, with local communities and businesses benefitting from green spaces as the project aims to create open, connected and inclusive public spaces and high streets.
In order to achieve that goal, the Civic Partnership Programme works with boroughs to regenerate high streets and partner with their residents to serve previously underserved communities, particularly those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, and those who are disabled. Alongside this, the programme will give communities expert advice on capital funding, helping them to build up local stakeholders to support the response to the cost of living crisis and the climate emergency.
Projects that will benefit from funding include:
- Neasden Town Centre (Brent) - £3,100,000
- Ilford Arrival (Redbridge) - £3,000,000
- Connecting Hoxton (Hackney) - £3,000,000
- Room for Rivers, A Place for People (Lewisham) - £2,486,000
- North End Quarter Fringes: Amplifying Surrey Street (Croydon) - £814,000
Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and the Fire Services, said:
“These projects aim to give Londoners of all backgrounds a greater role in shaping how their city grows and deliver better public spaces to live, work and play.
“I’m so impressed by the quality of proposals we received – this is testament to the collaborative efforts of London boroughs who have shaped the strategies, as well as the creativity and ingenuity in London’s diverse communities.
“Sadiq and I are committed to growing partnerships like these as a way of empowering local communities and creating a city where all Londoners have access to the best opportunities. I look forward to seeing all the positive impacts these projects will have in the future as we build a fairer, greener, more prosperous London for everyone.”
