Investment from Homes England is being used to unlock almost two thousand new homes and significant private investment through a project for a new garden village.
Hyndburn Borough Council will benefit from £30 million of grant funding from the Brownfield Infrastructure Land Fund, as it looks to enable the construction of more than 1,800 new homes. Alongside the new village the project will also unlock £430 million of private investment in the community.
The project will bring the former power station and colliery site back into use for the benefit of the new residents, with the housing include affordable and social homes. As well as the homes, the relevant infrastructure will also be delivered, with this including an extension to the local school, new sport and leisure facilities, and the necessary changes to local transport provision.
Leader of Hyndburn Borough Council Cllr Munsif Dad said:
“After careful consideration of information, listening to the many opinions about the project and receiving professional advice, the Council is now able to move forward with this project. Since we took control of the Council in May this year, Huncoat Garden Village has been at the very top of our agenda and we have had many meetings on the matter with local and national politicians, Council Officers, planners, representatives from Homes England and residents. We established a Cabinet Working Group in order to fully scrutinise the project, and they have concluded that the offer of funding should be accepted.
“The new Government have set ambitious house building targets for Hyndburn and large-scale projects such as this will help the Council achieve these. £30million of investment in infrastructure for Hyndburn is good news. We are happy to accept this award from Homes England, who we have invited to meet with us in Hyndburn next month, and look forward to delivering the groundwork to provide many news homes.”
Homes England made the offer of £30 million of funding at the end of August, with this leading to a Cabinet Working Group considering the funding in detail. Once the group had concluded its discussions, it recommended that the cabinet accepts the offer.
