Homes England has announced a £23 million grant to Transport for London to accelerate transport improvements that will unlock thousands of new homes across two major brownfield sites in East London.
The funding will deliver a new bus transit link connecting Thamesmead Waterfront and Beckton Riverside to key transport hubs, including Abbey Wood and Woolwich Elizabeth line stations. This vital infrastructure will be in place ahead of the planned Docklands Light Railway (DLR) extension, which was confirmed in the government’s 2025 Autumn Budget.
The Bus Transit project is a critical step towards enabling the creation of two vibrant communities, with 25,000 to 30,000 new homes planned across 145 hectares of brownfield land in the London Boroughs of Newham and Greenwich. The scheme will also enhance existing bus corridors, improve connectivity, and support sustainable growth.
Homes England has played an active role in supporting the DLR extension since its inception, working in partnership with TfL, the Greater London Authority (GLA), local boroughs, developers, and government departments. This collaboration aims to transform Thamesmead and Beckton into thriving, well-connected neighbourhoods.
Homes England Chief Executive Amy Rees said:
“This collaboration is just one example of how local and national organisations are working together, combining expertise and resources, to create communities with the homes and infrastructure that people need to thrive and grow.
“We are proud to work with local leaders, mayors and partners across the country, to help everybody have a safe, secure place to call home within sustainable, flourishing communities.”

The grant underscores Homes England’s commitment to unlocking housing potential through strategic infrastructure investment, ensuring that regeneration projects deliver long-term benefits for residents and businesses.
