The Welsh Government has announced that major steps forward have been made thanks to its investment in fast and reliable local broadband.
Coming after nearly £12 million was committed by the Welsh Government, daily life has been transformed within communities around Wales whilst public services have been enhanced and further opportunities for economic growth opened up. As part of this, 17 public sector services in North Wales, ranging from libraries to councils, are now benefitting from fibre-to-the-premises connections.
In Cardiff, 83 premises that include community centre spaces have seen gigabit capable connectivity introduced. The community centre spaces will also benefit from "free for life" gigabit-capable broadband to ensure that local initiatives and educational programmes can continue to develop. This early stage is set to be expanded to 632 premises, with the next phase already underway.
Another example of the project working for services and communities can be seen in three adult residential care homes in Newport. These are now benefitting from gigabit-capable full-fibre broadband for the first time, which has ensured that residents can keep in touch with their families, whilst the homes have been able to introduce assistive technology to help care staff to more effectively monitor the health conditions of residents.

This work comes as part of the Welsh Government’s strategy to improve digital infrastructure around the county and ensure that communities are enabled to thrive. Rebecca Evans, Wales’ Cabinet Secretary for the Economy, said:
“Fast and reliable broadband is essential for our communities and businesses. The Local Broadband Fund has already made a real difference, delivering tangible improvements to businesses, public services, and communities across Wales. By expanding digital access, we’re helping to create new opportunities for economic growth, employment, and education, as well as enhancing the quality of life for residents.”
