Artificial intelligence has become a significant player across all aspects of life and technology, especially within local government. In the AI and Governance in UK Local Authorities webinar, experts delved into the complexities of this technology, as well as discussing its implications, risks, and opportunities for local authorities.
Hosted by Tanya Arnold, the webinar featured insights from experts Kurt Frary, Madeleine Pow-Jones, and Councillor Faith Gakanje-Ajala, all of whom shared their experiences and strategies for navigating the challenges posed by AI.
As local councils increasingly adopt AI technologies for various functions, ranging from customer service to social care, governing this technology has never been more crucial. Kurt Frary, Head of IT at Norfolk County Council, emphasised that AI governance is not just about compliance but about ensuring public trust. He advocated for a governance framework that includes all stakeholders, ensuring everyone is on the same page regarding the ethical use of AI.
Madeleine Pow-Jones, from the Copyright Licensing Agency, highlighted the importance of copyright compliance in the context of AI. As generative AI tools proliferate, understanding how to use published works ethically is vital to avoid legal pitfalls. With copyright as a core pillar of AI governance, local authorities must develop clear policies to guide their staff in using AI responsibly.
The discussion also touched on the human element of AI governance. Cllr Faith Gakanje-Ajala points out that governance should not only protect data but also uphold rights and public trust. Engaging staff in the governance process is essential for fostering a culture of accountability and transparency.
As the webinar came to a conclusion it became clear that, while AI presents remarkable opportunities for local authorities, it also poses significant risks. The key takeaway is that effective governance frameworks are essential for harnessing the benefits of AI while safeguarding public interests. As local authorities navigate this complex landscape, the need for clear policies, ethical considerations, and ongoing dialogue will be paramount.
