West Midlands leads the way with 5G rollout

An independent study has concluded that the West Midlands is leading the way in terms of 5G coverage across the region.

The West Midlands currently has a coverage of 7.34%, almost 3 times that of Greater Manchester, with a coverage rating of just 2.84%.

As well as this, Birmingham currently leads in terms of coverage for the 6 biggest cities in Britain, at 11.19%, just beating London and Manchester.

West Midlands Combined Authority has invested heavily in 5G infrastructure with the help of WM5G.

WM5G was set up in order to accelerate the rollout of 5G infrastructure across the region, with some projects being accelerated by 6-12 months as a direct result of WM5G’s involvement.

Andy Street, the Mayor of the West Midlands, said:

“Investment in 5G will help us secure our region’s future prosperity and I am delighted that the West Midlands is pioneering this programme for the rest of the UK.

“WM5G is here to lead the way and accelerate the roll-out of the technology, which will drive substantial economic growth within the region.

“5G capabilities will attract leading entrepreneurs and start-up businesses to develop innovative new applications and services as part of WM5G’s Application Accelerator programme. New jobs and opportunities will make a real and positive difference to the people and businesses of the West Midlands.”

5G is set to revolutionise how people use connected devices, with applications in healthcare, transport and leisure.

A WPI economics report earlier this year claimed 5G could generate an extra £150bn over 10 years in the UK.
