People struggling with rising household costs are set to benefit from almost £5 million in Welsh Government funding aimed at tackling food poverty and building long-term financial resilience across communities.
The Welsh Government has announced a £4.8 million investment for local authorities during the current financial year, providing vital emergency food aid for individuals and families facing crisis situations while also supporting initiatives designed to prevent poverty.
The funding is intended to bolster community-led support services, with councils able to invest in projects such as lunch clubs, community cafés and social supermarkets. Local authorities will also have the flexibility to provide direct grants to food banks experiencing increased demand as the cost of living continues to impact households across Wales.
Alongside immediate crisis support, the funding package is designed to address the underlying causes of poverty. Organisations will be able to expand cost of living advice services, helping residents maximise their income, access available support and improve their long-term financial stability.
Capital funding will also be made available to enable community organisations to purchase essential equipment including fridges, freezers and cooking facilities. This investment aims to increase the storage and distribution capacity of local food networks, while helping to reduce food waste by making better use of surplus supplies.
Recognising the additional challenges often faced in more remote areas, the Welsh Government has also allocated extra funding to rural local authorities to support the delivery of services across dispersed communities.
Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Minister for Social Justice and Equality, Sioned Williams said:
“Nobody in Wales should have to go without food or struggle to make ends meet. This funding will help local authorities respond quickly to people in crisis right now, while also building the long-term support that helps families avoid hardship in future.
“We know the cost of living continues to put pressure on households across the country, and that's why we're targeting support where it's needed most. We want every part of Wales to have the resources they need to support people through difficult times and build lasting resilience for the future.”
The latest investment builds on the success of previous Welsh Government support programmes, including projects such as Down to Zero in Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT).
The organisation provides affordable, locally grown and pesticide-free produce directly to households across the county borough. During the last year alone, Down to Zero delivered more than 230 boxes of fresh, low-cost vegetables to residents, helping improve access to healthy food while supporting local food production.
The £4.8 million funding forms part of a broader package of Welsh Government measures aimed at helping households manage financial pressures, increase incomes and reduce everyday costs.
Existing support available to residents includes:
- The Single Advice Fund
- The Discretionary Assistance Fund
- The Warm Homes Programme
- Fuel bank vouchers
- Free school meals
- The Bwyd a Hwyl Food and Fun school holiday food and enrichment programme
The latest funding announcement reinforces the Welsh Government's commitment to supporting communities during the ongoing cost of living challenges while investing in sustainable, community-led solutions that can deliver lasting benefits for families across Wales.
