Cheltenham Borough Council has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Levelling Up Department, with funding being secured for an innovative project.
Through the MoU, the council will benefit from £20 million to support the delivery of the first phase of the Golden Valley Development. This development will see the construction of the National Cyber Innovation Centre in the area, with enterprise, academia and business all coming together to support wider ambitions for a vibrant, innovative community in Cheltenham.
“The Golden Valley Development will build on our strength as a town and helps to deliver jobs, housing and prosperity to Cheltenham.”
The council has already committed £130 million to the project, with that particular funding being agreed in September in 2023, and the National Cyber Innovation Centre itself being home to office, event and beverage spaces, whilst being accessible to schools, universities and the local community. This will be used to inspire young people to take up careers in cyber, whilst also support job growth for members of the community.
Cheltenham Borough Council’s Chief Executive, Gareth Edmundson, said:
“Making progress to secure this funding is excellent news. The Golden Valley Development is moving forward at pace and the £20 million Levelling Up Funding helps build on the significant investment already made by the council to deliver this pioneering project and to transform West Cheltenham into an internationally recognised tech and security with the National Cyber Innovation Centre at its heart.
“The Golden Valley Development will build on our strength as a town and helps to deliver jobs, housing and prosperity to Cheltenham.”
Funding will be formally ratified and accepted when the council’s cabinet meets on the 23rd July, with the investment being able to be used straight away.
