Gloucestershire County Council is launching a new programme that will support young people to gain vital new digital skills.
New digital workshops will be offered to young people, allowing them to learn from industry experts and gain real-world experience of working in those industries to give them inspiration to begin their digital careers.
With three-years’ worth of funding from the Arts Council, the programme will be specifically designed around young people in Gloucestershire who are not currently in education, employment, or training, and will run alongside the school term. To give learners the best possible education, they will be given access to hands-on experience and the opportunity to develop new creative digital skills, as well as making connections with people in the industry that might be able to help them jumpstart their careers.
Those who wish to take part will also be given the chance to showcase their skills to a wider network, whilst being able to see the things that other learners are creating.
Councillor Dave Norman, Cabinet Member for Libraries at Gloucestershire County Council, commented on the programme, saying:
“It’s great to see this project coming to life reaching out to younger people to help them to develop their tech skills to support them in their future jobs and careers. I look forward to seeing the ideas they come up with and where these sessions take them.”
Digital skills are an important offering for those who are currently not in education, employment, or training, as they contribute to the futureproofing of the workforce, as well as giving residents the confidence that they will need to become a valuable member of their community. As discussed in Public Sector Executive’s Digital Transformation online conference, digital skills are also vital to the public sector, with it ensuring that current and future challenges can be addressed.
