Nottingham City Council’s long-standing leader to step down
The long-standing leader of Nottingham City Council has announced he is stepping down from the authority at the local elections in May.
Jon Collins has led the city council for 16 years and was elected as a councillor in Nottingham 32 years ago in 1987.
But the authority’s leader has said it was “right for me” to step down in the upcoming local elections, stating that his decision has no political motivation.
Making the announcement on Twitter, Collins said it had been “an honour” to serve the people of Nottingham.
The Labour representative for the St Ann’s ward added that he was looking forward to spending more time on his hobbies, including walking and climbing.
He joins 17 other Labour councillors who are standing down ahead of the local elections, which will be held on 2 May.
Nottingham City Council said in a statement: “We can confirm that in order to pursue other opportunities, Cllr Jon Collins will not be standing as a candidate in the forthcoming local elections and therefore on the 2 May will cease to be Leader of Nottingham City Council.”
