Sharing the allocation of maternity leave demonstrates a step forward for this country, recognising that in some couples it will be the woman who is the main breadwinner, and she should be supported to go back to work sooner.

Anything which provides more flexibility for families, and acknowledges a less traditional model of family life should be welcomed by all.

Parenting is no longer the sole concern or responsibility of mothers, and the proposals will offer a fairer response to caretaking of babies that could have significant economic benefits.
