IT professionals urged to lead broadband services
Heads of IT are best placed to bring broadband to areas of theUKcurrently without it, the association of ICT professionals in local public services, Socitm, urges.
A new report suggests that councils need to use the national broadband programme to build upon by developing their own initiatives. Additionally, the public sector must work together to make the most of existing assets, including infrastructure, and overcome legal and commercial barriers.
The briefing also states that IT professionals have the necessary expertise to assemble practical design and businesses cases for local initiatives.
“Internet access in rural areas is especially important for jobs, education and business, particularly where transport infrastructure is not always good,” said Socitm past-president and Local CIO Council Chair, Jos Creese.
Chris Head, author of the briefing, added: “Local politicians are waking up to the opportunities that broadband offers, and recognise the downsides of being left behind. Now is the time for Socitm members to add their skills to help accelerate progress.”
