Advanced biofuels competition announced
A £25m competition is to encourage the development of advanced biofuels, to cut transport carbon emissions.
Advanced biofuels are liquid fuels made from waste organic material, rather than using products that could also be used as food crops. The UK demonstrator could lead to widespread commercial production of the fuels.
A feasibility study is being launched to design the criteria for bidders and the competition will start to accept submissions after that is completed. A winner could be announced within a year, the Department for Transport said.
Transport minister Norman Baker told the Guardian: “It's hugely important that we decarbonise transport. We have been up hill and down dale on biofuels in the past few years. What we need to do is distinguish between good biofuels and bad biofuels, and this competition will produce good biofuels.”
