Work underway for new Merseyside combined authority
The first meeting of the newly established combined authority for Merseyside and Liverpool has been held at the Merseytravel headquarters in Mann Island.
With the leaders of all six Mersey boroughs in attendance to get business underway, it is expected that the name “Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, St Helens, Sefton and Wirral Combined Authority” –will be cast aside, potentially in in favour of the “Liverpool City Region”.
Last week, a Grand Committee of Peers met in The House of Lords to give its consent to the proposals, which will see Liverpool join forces with its neighbours to become an over-arching body that will be responsible for driving economic growth and major strategic projects for the region.
However, at the meeting of the Grand Committee, there were concerns raised over the current name of the authority. Other business the leaders will consider at the meeting will include electing a chair of the new body.
All the councils which make up the new authority have stated that they and “their partners wish to capitalise on the latent potential for economic growth by focussing on investment activity across the four key growth areas – the Low Carbon Economy, the Knowledge Economy, Visitor Economy and the Super Port – in the region”.
