Unison ‘prepare for the worst’ over pensions

The general secretary of Britain’s second largest union, Unison, has warned he will look to ballot members on strike action if talks with the Government over pension reforms fail.

Dave Prentis made his comments ahead of his address at the union’s annual conference, potentially signalling even more strike action ahead of what is already looking like a ‘summer of discontent’.

Speaking to the BBC today, Prentis said: “It is quite clear that this coalition will not move if there is one day of industrial action, it will take sustained action, and we will not be starved back like the miners.”

Major strikes by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, the National Union of Teachers and the Public and Commercial Services Union have already been proposed for June 30, although Unison has said it would need more time to ballot its 1.3 million members.
