‘Insufficient’ broadband progress for three areas

Three groups of local authorities need to improve progress on their broadband plans, as the Government seeks urgent talks with councils in and around Newcastle, Liverpool and Bath.

Of the 47 projects for broadband roll-out, 44 have either been approved or are likely to be approved shortly. But three have been categorised as making ‘insufficient progress’ by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport.

Minister Ed Vaizey said “We do not intend to continue to fund councils if they continue to fail to deliver.”

This could jeopardise the Government’s plans for superfast broadband in 90% of theUKby 2015 and the basic requirement for 2mbps broadband available across the country.

A further £100m of European funding has also been made available to add to theUK’s £630m investment into improving broadband.
